Temppeliaukio Church

Discover the amazing Rock Church

Quarried out of the natural bedrock and designed by architects Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen, Temppeliaukio Church opened in 1969. The church is immersed in the mountain, but sunlight comes in through the skylights.

The building is often used as a concert hall thanks to the extraordinary acoustics created by the rugged rock surface of the walls. As an altarpiece they use a crack in the rock wall.

Its spectacular atmosphere, unique architecture and excellent acoustics make it one of the most popular attractions in Helsinki. The church is part of the Töölö parish, and its copper-domed interiors are a popular venue for wedding and christening ceremonies.
